  8.      This is a quick guide, for users of previous versions of VDE, to 
  9. noticable changes in operation.  Please check VDE.REF and VINST.REF for full 
  10. details.

  13.                         USAGE POLICY and CREDIT CARDS
  14.  
  15.      There is now an optional individual user registration (including a copy 
  16. of VDE mailed to you on disk, and support) for $30.  Also, credit cards may 
  17. now be used to charge registration and site license fees, through the Public 
  18. Software Library.  See VDE.DOC.

  21.                                      VDE
  22.  
  23.      *  ^KE (rename) will now accept a directory name alone, to move your work 
  24. into another directory under the same filename.
  25.  
  26.      *  ^K# (auto number) now uses the simple character "#" as a number 
  27. marker; the previous command ^P# has been removed.  (You can convert files 
  28. containing old-style markers by replacing (with ^QA) the old code, which can 
  29. be entered as ^PF, with "#".)
  30.  
  31.      *  AltS (split file) usage has been simplified: you supply only the input 
  32. file name.  VDE constructs the output name by adding numbers to the end of the 
  33. file name (so TEST.FIL produces TEST1.FIL, etc).
  34.  
  35.      *  There is a new function, delete word left, given by ^[BkSp], though 
  36. this can be changed to delete character left (as before) with VINST.
  37.  
  38.      *  ^[Ins] now functions as a Word Insert toggle, the same as ^].
  39.  
  40.      *  The [Home/End] keys, when used repeatedly, will keep on moving to the 
  41. beginning of the previous line or the end of the next one.
  42.  
  43.      *  VDE now runs in 40-column mode, on portable computers with small 
  44. screens or on any CGA/EGA/VGA system using the MODE CO40 command.  Some menus 
  45. remain 80 columns wide and can be viewed (scrolled) by pressing the arrow 
  46. keys.  See SCREEN SIZE.  (Users of the HP95LX palmtop, see also special notes 
  47. under INSTALLATION in VINST.REF.)
  48.  
  49.      *  AltA and AltE now fully support the changing of screen sizes under 
  50. UltraVision.  See SCREEN SIZE.
  51.  
  52.      *  The horizontal scroll commands Esc[<,>] are easier to use; they will 
  53. move the cursor if needed to allow scrolling, where before they would not.
  54.  
  55.      *  The command help menus (^J) can now be paged through with [PgUp,Dn] or 
  56. the [^,v] arrow keys.
  57.  
  58.      *  Command-line/file-loading syntax now accepts spaces, as well as 
  59. commas, as file delimiters: "VDE FILE1 FILE2" = "VDE FILE1,FILE2".
  60.  
  61.      *  At most string prompts, ^F can now be typed to enter the complete 
  62. current filename.  (Previously this only worked within macros.)  The action of 
  63. ^R has also been changed: at a Find/Change prompt, it replays the last 
  64. find/change string; at other prompts, it replays the last string entry of any 
  65. type.  (Previously it always replayed the last filename entered.)
  66.  
  67.      *  CTRLCAPS.COM has been revised to improve compatibility with other 
  68. software, and now works somewhat differently than the version provided with 
  69. VDE 1.61.  See CONTROL KEY.

  74.      *  A new user option allows choosing whether ^[BkSp] deletes a word to 
  75. the left, or just a character; also, the option for whether [Home,End] move to 
  76. the top/bottom of the screen, or the beginning/end of the line, has been 
  77. restored.  See USER OPTIONS.
  78.  
  79.      *  The installation for AltA (132 column mode) now supports "Standard" 
  80. SVGA -- including any VGA board (like Boca) using video modes 23h and 22h for 
  81. 132 columns.

  83.      *  A new IBM PC Installation option allows you to fix conflicts between 
  84. VDE and other software over the use of the Print Screen key.
  85.  
  86.      *  Entry of hex strings in VINST for the printer driver has been 
  87. simplified; instead of the (#),bytes format used previously, simply enter the 
  88. desired bytes.  To enter a null string (00), type ^J or ^[Ret].
  89.  
  90.      *  There is now an installation for the HP 95LX palmtop computer.
  91.  
  92.      *  There is now an installation for the Otrona 8:16 with IBM video 
  93. emulation, allowing faster screen updating.  (The standard 8:16 without 
  94. emulation must use the slower Generic Terminal installation.)
  95.  
  96.      *  The IBM PC Installation option for keyboard type now includes a choice 
  97. supporting the Tandy 1000 keyboard.
  98.  
  99.      *  The Generic Terminal installation now allows choice of screen colors.

  101.      *  There are now six, not four, filetype exclusions and default filetypes 
  102. under User Options.

  107.                     VDE 1.61 UPDATE SUMMARY (27 Mar 1991)
  108.  
  109.      *  The Print command (^KP) now offers a new option "A" for convenient 
  110. addressing of envelopes while writing correspondence, by simply marking off 
  111. the address as a block and inserting an envelope in your printer.  For full 
  112. instructions see ENVELOPES and PRINTER INSTALLATION.
  113.      *  The AltE command now displays a prompt offering a choice from a wider 
  114. range of screen sizes, from 17 to 57 lines.  Screen sizes other than 25 and 
  115. 43/50 require the new companion file VDEOPT.DAT.  If this file is not present, 
  116. AltE will simply toggle between 25 and 43/50 as before.  See SCREEN CONTROLS.
  117.      *  A new method of marking blocks has been added: move the cursor to the 
  118. start or end of the desired text; depress and hold Shift; use the PC keypad 
  119. keys (arrows, [Home, End, PgUp/Dn]) to move the cursor to the other end of the 
  120. block; and release Shift when finished.
  121.      *  There is a new file mode /C, for programming in "C" and other 
  122. structured languages.  It is a nondocument like /N, but defaults to autoindent 
  123. on, and variable tabs at intervals of 5 columns.
  124.      *  Accessory files (including VDEOPT.DAT and all ".VDx" files) may now be 
  125. kept in a designated "VDE directory", using the SET VDE= command.  See 
  126. DIRECTORIES.

  130.      *  The "Installation" section offers two new options:  For IBM PCs, you 
  131. can specify a default screen size for editing with VDE (see "AltE" above).  
  132. For the generic ANSI installation, you can select support for the special 
  133. keyboards of DEC Rainbow computers or VT-series terminals.  See INSTALLATION.
  134.      *  The "Options" section offers a new option to determine whether the new 
  135. page is positioned at the top of the screen after use of the ^QI,^QN,^QL 
  136. commands.
  137.      *  Several improvements have been made regarding data files:
  138.          VINST now creates ".VDI" files for storing installation, options, and 
  139.     menubar information.  See INSTALLATION.
  140.          VINST now creates ".VDC" files for storing character width data.  
  141.     These, and the ".VDG" files for graphics, can now also be accessed from 
  142.     VDE using the AltU command or command-line semicolon syntax.
  143.          Since printer drivers have changed several times recently, VINST can 
  144.     read .VDP files from versions 1.52 through 1.6 as well.  (VDE cannot, so 
  145.     write them back to disk with VINST before trying to use them with VDE.)

  150.                      VDE 1.6 UPDATE SUMMARY (12 Dec 1990)
  151.  
  152.      *  A new "Auto Format" mode (command ^OM or {Text:auto fmT}) provides 
  153. continuous reformatting of text during typing or editing, so that manual 
  154. reformat (^B) is unnecessary.  See AUTO FORMAT.
  155.      *  A new "Right Justify" mode (command ^OJ or {Text:Justify}) inserts 
  156. spaces in text as necessary so that formatting leaves an even right margin.  
  157. See JUSTIFICATION.
  158.      *  A new paragraph tab command (^OG) allows setting a temporary indent.  
  159. See INDENTING.
  160.      *  Undelete (^U) can now be used repeatedly to recover prior deletions.  
  161. See UNDELETION.
  162.      *  The MenuBar mode has been revised: VDE commands now work in MenuBar 
  163. mode as well.  (A new choice {Misc:Escape} can access Esc commands.)  Also, a 
  164. new {User:} menu bar can contain five new commands of your choice.  See 
  165. OPERATING MODES.
  166.      *  The preview command (^OD) now shows page numbers, and indicates page 
  167. breaks with dotted lines on screen.  See PAGE PREVIEW.
  168.      *  To make hyphenation easier, VDE now uses conditional or "soft" 
  169. hyphens, entered with the command ^P-.  See HYPHENATION.
  170.      *  There is a new file mode /U ("U"nformatted), which produces files 
  171. without soft carriage returns.  See FILE MODES.
  172.      *  Two new macro commands have been added:
  173.          Esc* is a "universal toggle set", allowing a macro to specify any 
  174.     status for Insert, Justify, and other toggles.  See TOGGLE CONTROL.
  175.          Esc$ allows you to control continued execution of a macro when an 
  176.     error occurs.  See MACRO PROGRAMMING.
  177.      *  The print command (^KP) now allows headers on the left side of the 
  178. page, using the "<" character.  See PRINTING.
  179.      *  The Match file function (AltM) now compares word by word, ignoring 
  180. formatting differences in documents (line length, word spacing, etc).  In /N 
  181. mode, it is still an exact character by character match.  Also, when files 
  182. match, it finishes at the end of the file (no longer a "not found" message).

  186.      *  A new main menu item "menu<B>ar mode" lets you customize the new 
  187. "User" menu bar to contain 5 commands of your choice.  (The choice for MenuBar 
  188. vs Command mode has also been moved here from the options section.)
  189.      *  New user options allow for a choice of default status for auto format, 
  190. double spacing, and proportional spacing.
  191.      *  For convenience, graphic character sets (for the AltG command) can 
  192. also now be stored and retrieved as disk files (.VDG).
  193.      *  The computer installation now supports the Paradise VGA+ video card as 
  194. a choice for 132-column mode operation (AltA).
  195.      *  The printer installation now allows you to specify different ports 
  196. (e.g., LPT2) on systems with several printers.
  197.      *  Printer code entry now allows entering a single quote (`) + character 
  198. instead of a hex value, and the use of [BkSp] as a correction key.
